Giving back to a community that has enriched your life can be a deeply rewarding experience but knowing where to start can often feel overwhelming. Many people feel the urge to contribute, but it’s easy to put it in the “too hard” basket. Questions like Where do I begin? Will my donation truly make a difference? Which organisations align with my values? Should I give a one-off gift or commit to ongoing support? —can all create hesitation.
One meaningful and often overlooked way to begin your giving journey is by considering a donation of all or part of your superannuation. You may be surprised to learn that around 1% of New Zealanders over the age of 65 don’t claim their superannuation payments at all. Many more are fortunate enough not to need the full amount to support their retirement. For those in this position, redirecting some or all their superannuation can be a powerful way to give back and make a lasting impact.
This was certainly true for one of our generous Super Legacy for Southland donors. We recently caught up with them to discuss the motivation behind their decision to donate their superannuation. These reflections offer valuable insight—and real food for thought—on how dipping your toe into the world of philanthropy can be a meaningful way to support and shape the future of your community for generations to come.
“I am a firm believer in universal superannuation – we all make our own choices in life, and we shouldn’t differentiate in retirement. But that said, for those of us who are not reliant on our superannuation, I do think we should be considering “giving back” with our super.
It is a privilege to be able to think about how I could do this, what community benefit or “good cause” that I wanted to support. I chose to contribute towards the operational funding of the Southland Foundation. I think the Foundation is an excellent initiative. I am very happy that my superannuation goes towards giving back to the local community, a place that has given me so many opportunities. Through the work of the Foundation, I am contributing to improving Southland for us all and for future generations”. – Donor Super Legacy for Southland.
You may choose to donate a portion or all your superannuation, with the flexibility to pause or stop your contributions at any time.
Donations may be eligible for a tax credit, and we will provide you with an annual donation receipt to make claiming this credit as simple as possible.
When you donate, you decide where your contribution is directed—it could support the Southland Impact Fund, a special interest fund, or even assist with the operational expenses of the Southland Foundation.
Every contribution, no matter the size becomes a powerful building block for lasting change, helping to shape a brighter future. When we give, we’re not just offering support for today—we’re empowering communities to take charge of their own destiny. By growing our own community funds and giving in perpetuity, we pave the way for true self-sufficiency and resilience for generations to come.
This is how we turn generosity into a legacy.
